Jody is not a real person. He is a metaphor for the anxiety soldiers stationed in faraway places, or at war experience when worrying about their girlfriends or wife’s who are left behind while they serve. Jody is the opportunistic cad who slips in and steals their hearts. The outcome is often a “Dear John letter”. For some, married men in particular, it is often devastating.
I wrote “Jody” on the Forgiving Sea to honor all warriors who lost loves and future happiness. For me, it was freeing. I was one of the lucky ones.
